Eliminates Chlorine Handling & Storage
ChlorEase makes chlorine right in the pool water, automatically and continuously, so you no longer have to buy, store or handle dangerous packaged chlorine. Fire hazards associated with the storage of dry packaged chlorine are eliminated, as are any risks of potential contact with these chemicals by young children. No more lugging pails and buckets of chlorine to and from the store and the pool; and the days of forgetting to add chlorine to the pool become a thing of the past.

Better Water Quality
Many common water chemistry problems are the result of insufficient sanitization. Because ChlorEase helps keep a consistent Free Chlorine residual (1-3 ppm), your water is less likely to experience problems associated with periods of very high or low chlorine levels, such as algae growth or bather discomfort. Additionally, salt has a softening effect, just like a water softener, so hair and skin feels soft and silky rather than dry and brittle as with packaged chlorine.

No Red Eyes, Itchy Skin or Chlorine Odors
In pools sanitized with liquid or dry chlorine, the residue buildup (chloramines) from the oxidized contaminants may cause red eyes, itchy skin or rashes, and " a chlorine smell". In these pools, chloramines must be destroyed by superchlorination or shocking. In a ChlorEase pool, as water flows through the unit, it is constantly shocked because of the powerful sanitizing action that occurs in the electrolytic cell. With chloramines constantly being destroyed, the irritating side effects are greatly reduced or eliminated.

Simplified Water Chemistry
Chlorine stabilizer prevents chlorine from being destroyed too quickly by the sun. When using stabilized chlorine (such as Trichlor tablets or sticks), stabilizer levels increase over time and chlorine becomes less effective. A ChlorEase pool gives you control over stabilizer levels since you add it as needed. Controlled stabilizer levels, together with consistent chlorine levels, make water chemistry easier to maintain.

More Economical
After the initial cost of the ChlorEase saltwater chlorinator, you no longer have to purchase expensive packaged chlorine season after season. Aside from the initial startup, salt is only added to replace what is lost due to splash out, backwashing, pump out or draining, making the additional salt expense about $10-20 yearly. And, depending on climate and usage conditions, cells can last up to 5 years, and can be replaced. The only other cost is for electricity and that is very modest.

Environmentally Friendly
Salt is a safe and natural chemical. ChlorEase recycles salt over and over so there are no by-product wastes added to the environment.

ChlorEase Saltwater Chlorinator For Above-Ground Pools uses the same saltwater chlorination technology as all other salt chlorine generators in the market. Chlorine is produced on-site by the electrolytic breakdown of salt in the water. The ChlorEase unit is submerged in the pool water rather than plumbed in-line with the filtration system and is designed for above-ground pools only. ChlorEase saltwater chlorinator is a stand-alone sanitizing system that attaches conveniently beneath the top rail of both new and existing pools, and hangs down along the inner pool wall. It plugs into any 110 Volt GFI protected outlet.

Installation:

  1. Remove top ledge of the pool where ChlorEase will be installed (near a 120vac GFCI socket) by removing screws and caps. Installation near the return line is recommended to maximize circulation of the chlorine being produced. Note that the unit cannot be plugged into a circuit that is on a timer! This unit must have electrical supply 24hrs a day 7 days a week. DO NOT PLUG IN YET!
  2. Estimate how much cord will be needed to reach the power source. If desired, the extra cord can be wound up in the unit

    a) Open the cover by removing the screws at the top of the face plate, using the tool provided.

    b) Remove the spool and pull about 1/2 the amount of cord you want to wind (between 6-18") through the top of the unit. This portion of the cord will wind up around the spool as more cord is pulled in.

    c) Replace the spool and lay the cord coming from the top opening of the unit down the middle of the spool.

    d) Twist the spool clockwise to wind the cord.

    e) If there is too much leftover cord in the unit after winding, you've pulled too much through the top in Step B. Start over but don't pull as much lead cord through the opening.

    f) Once the cord is wound, replace the face plate and fasten the screws.
  3. Slide ChlorEase onto the pool wall, preferably positioned in the middle of the top ledge, then tighten screws on the back of mounting bracket to secure it against the top of pool wall.
  4. Simple grounding of your pool is recommended to further minimize the risk of corrosion to metal pool parts. This can be done using a metal stake in the ground and a wire attached to the ground wire screw provided on the metal bracket.
  5. Replace the top rail and all hardware.
  6. Follow instructions for Startup below.

Startup and Spring Opening:

  1. Adjust the water chemistry to the proper levels. See water chemistry levels.
  2. Turn on filter and add the appropriate amount of salt to the pool water to achieve a level of 3600-4000 ppm. See salt table. DO NOT OPERATE CHLORINATOR IF SALT LEVEL IS BELOW 2500 PPM.
  3. Use a brush to dissolve and disperse the salt throughout the pool.
  4. Add the appropriate amount of stabilizer to minimize chlorine deterioration from the sun. See stabilizer chart.
  5. Shock treat the pool with a saltwater-compatible chlorinating product to initialize the chlorine residual as ChlorEase begins to generate chlorine. ChlorEase will then maintain the 1-3 ppm chlorine level thereafter.
  6. Plug ChlorEase into 120vac GFCI socket. Place transformer in a protected area at least 3 feet from the pool. Bubbles should rise from submerged cell. Initially for the first few days, a soft milky cloud may appear around the ChlorEase unit. This is normal and a good indicator that the unit is working properly.

Maintenance:
The ChlorEase system will automate the daily sanitization of your pool, but it is very important that you continue your routine maintenance (water balance, shocking, etc.). Test the salt levels regularly with saline test strips available at your local pool store. Periodic cleaning of the cell to remove calcium buildup is also required (every 2-3 months in soft water areas and monthly in hard water areas).

Cleaning the Cell:

  1. Unplug the ChlorEase unit. Remove the ChlorEase housing from the pool by squeezing the retaining clips with the plastic tool provided to unlock the housing from the metal bracket. Grasp the housing and pull down to remove it from the bracket. Unscrew the 2 plastic screws on the front cover with the plastic key provided. Squeeze the side clips to remove the front cover. Remove the wire spool and unwind the excess cord so the housing can be hung over the edge of the pool. Unsnap the cell from the housing and place in a container of mildly acid solution for 45 minutes. Hose off with water and inspect the cell. If scale remains, change the cleaning solution and repeat the process.
  2. Reinstall cell when all the scale is removed.

Winterizing:
It is preferable to remove the entire ChlorEase system for winter. Simply reverse the installation procedure and store the system in a shed or garage. ALWAYS CLEAN THE CELL BEFORE WINTER. If you do not remove the entire ChlorEase system for winterization, the ChlorEase housing and cell must be removed from the pool. The unit will be damaged if left in freezing water and should be removed by following the instructions for cleaning the cell (see Maintenance section above). Use twine or wire ties to attach the housing and cell securely to the cable that holds the cover onto the pool. Secure it in a way that the housing and cell will not swing around in the wind and cause damage.

Saltwater Chlorination

Saltwater chlorination is a process of sanitizing water, using chlorine that is produced in the pool water from ordinary salt. Developed in Australia over 25 years ago, the technology is utilized in over 90% of all pools and spas in Australia today. The process occurs via electrolysis, using ordinary salt and a device called a saltwater chlorinator - also referred to as a chlorine generator, salt chlorine generator, or salt chlorinator. Initially, a low concentration of salt is added to the water. As water passes over the chlorinator's specially coated plates, an electric current breaks down the salt and water into their basic elements to form hypochlorous acid, which is the active sanitizer in all forms of chlorine. The chlorine kills algae and bacteria in the water and oxidizes the waste. Thereafter, the chlorine regenerates itself back to salt and begins the process over again in a virtually unending cycle. Since salt does not evaporate, an occasional addition of salt is needed only to replace what is lost due to splash out, pump out, draining or backwashing.

Is the salt irritating to swimmers? Can you taste the salt?
No, the salt actually softens the water, just like a residential water softener, leaving hair and skin with a soft, silky feel. The low concentration of salt is generally below the taste level of most people. In comparison, the recommended salt level in a ChlorEase pool (3600-4000 ppm) is less than half the salinity of the human eye and about 12 times less than ocean water. So, a ChlorEase pool is NOT a saltwater pool.

Does the salt concentration cause corrosion?
No, unless two dissimilar metals are in immediate proximity to one another. With the increasing popularity of salt chlorine generating systems, most products today are manufactured to avoid this situation. Salt has no effect on vinyl or plastic components in the pool.

Is this technology safe?
Absolutely. This technology has been used in swimming pools for over 25 years. What is new is that ChlorEase has a cost of a few hundred dollars, as opposed to units that are priced in the thousands of dollars. Affordability has made this technology practical for aboveground pools. If a GFI protected outlet is used, there is no electrical hazard. ChlorEase has received ETL approval.

Will I still need chlorine?
Unless the pool has been subjected to very heavy bather loads, ChlorEase should be able to supply the needs of pools up to 18,000 gallons. In those instances where heavy bather load or conditions have depleted the chlorine level or there is a loss of water quality, the addition of some shock might be necessary.

How much chlorine does ChlorEase produce?
Running the unit continuously 24 hours a day, the chlorine output is approximately 5 ounces per day (on a 100% chlorine basis).

What kind of salt can be used?
It is imperative to use only sodium chloride (NaCl) that is 99% pure. This is commonly available at most reputable pool stores or home centers in 50 lb. bags. Non-iodized food-grade or water softener grades of salt are suitable. DO NOT use iodized salt, rock salt or salt with yellow prussiate of soda.

Does ChlorEase bleach or wrinkle liners?
No. It is recommended that the unit be placed near the return line to circulate the chlorine. Extensive testing has been conducted in different environments and no bleaching or wrinkling has resulted. Since chlorine is produced in a steady, consistent manner, harsh levels that might accelerate liner fading are avoided.

How does it affect water chemistry?
This is a chlorine pool and is maintained in exactly the same way. A big advantage is that there is no buildup of stabilizer or calcium byproducts that are associated with traditional chlorine products.
